iStent® Procedure for Glaucoma
The iStent is one of the smallest medical implants used in the human body and offers a safe, effective way to help control mild to moderate open-angle glaucoma. It is often performed at the same time as cataract surgery, offering patients the opportunity to manage two eye conditions with a single procedure.
Glaucoma is caused by a buildup of pressure inside the eye due to poor fluid drainage. Over time, this pressure can damage the optic nerve and lead to permanent vision loss. The iStent is a tiny titanium device that is implanted into the eye’s natural drainage system to restore proper fluid outflow and reduce intraocular pressure (IOP).
How the iStent Works:

· The iStent is placed into the trabecular meshwork (the eye’s drainage canal) during a quick, minimally invasive procedure.
· It allows fluid to bypass the blockage and drain more effectively, helping to lower IOP.
· The procedure is typically combined with cataract surgery and doesn’t significantly add to surgery or recovery time.
Benefits of the iStent:

· Minimally invasive with a strong safety profile
· Reduces intraocular pressure effectively
· May reduce or eliminate the need for daily glaucoma medications
· Performed alongside cataract surgery with no added incisions
· Rapid recovery and minimal discomfort

The iStent is best suited for patients with mild to moderate open-angle glaucoma, particularly those who are already scheduled for cataract surgery. It can help preserve vision, improve long-term eye pressure control, and enhance quality of life.
