Preserflo™ MicroShunt Procedure for Glaucoma

The Preserflo™ MicroShunt is an innovative, minimally invasive surgical option designed to help manage open-angle glaucoma, one of the most common types of glaucoma. This condition causes increased pressure inside the eye (intraocular pressure or IOP), which can lead to progressive vision loss if not properly controlled.

The MicroShunt is a tiny, flexible drainage device made from a biocompatible material called SIBS (poly(styrene-block-isobutylene-block-styrene)). During the procedure, the MicroShunt is implanted just beneath the surface of the eye to create a new drainage pathway for the fluid inside the eye (aqueous humor). By helping excess fluid flow out more easily, the device lowers IOP and helps protect the optic nerve from further damage.

Benefits of the Preserflo MicroShunt:

•Minimally invasive with less tissue disruption than traditional glaucoma surgery

•Lower risk of complications compared to procedures like trabeculectomy

•Can significantly reduce or even eliminate the need for daily glaucoma eye drops

•Shorter recovery time and less postoperative care.

The Preserflo MicroShunt is typically recommended for patients with moderate to advanced glaucoma who haven’t achieved sufficient pressure control with medications or laser treatment. It’s performed under local anesthesia, usually as an outpatient procedure.
